Rutgers Public Safety Rutgers University
Policing & Security Units

Rutgers-New Brunswick/Piscataway RUPD has many policing and security units working together around-the-clock, and in partnership with the surrounding communities, to protect and serve all individuals while on the Rutgers campuses.

Police Officers
The 58 Rutgers Police Officers operate under a community policing philosophy and are assigned to specific geographical areas to increase accountability and sense of shared ownership with the community to address safety and security concerns. In addition to all regular police duties RUPD officers also conduct community service and assistance programs as well as a number of formal public safety trainings.  For further information on any of our educational programs, please contact Sgt. Jeffrey Jannarone.

Community Policing Officer (CPO)
RUPD has designated one police officer to each of the five Rutgers campuses to manage the policing and security efforts for their specific community. The Community Policing Officers have completed advanced training in many programs such as security design, communication effectiveness, and enhancing community involvement to support RUPD policing operations.
Upon request, CPOs will conduct security surveys of on-campus facilities and off-campus housing, and present educational programs to students and staff. They may be contacted in person at their offices in each campus student center, via email or by phone.

Detective Bureau
Five RUPD officers make up the Detective Bureau that conducts further investigation of open crime cases. They use advanced interviewing skills and state-of-the-art forensics to identify the correct violators. Most important, they ensure that victim’s rights are respected.

Traffic Unit
The Rutgers University Police Traffic Unit is designed to monitor and enforce traffic laws both on and off campus.  The unit also prepares traffic control plans for all major events at the university and ensures that all work zone safety rules are in effect for construction on the roadways.  The goal of the unit is to create a safe traveling atmosphere for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Community Service Officer (CSO)
Community Security Officers are full-time students who are uniformed, unarmed paid employees of the RUPD. They have chosen to work for the RUPD and many of them go on to careers in public safety or public service.
All CSO’s receive 40 hours of formal training through the New Jersey College and University Public Safety Association prior to assignment of duties.
CSOs have a large variety of responsibilities on and off campus. They patrol on foot, bicycle, horseback, and in specially marked security vehicles. They perform package checks at athletic and special events, operate the Knight Mover Shuttle, provide after-hours escorts, and patrol parking lots. They are the eyes and ears of the community, notifying police of suspicious persons or activities.

Security Officers
Security Officers are uniformed, unarmed staff that patrol the campuses 365 days per year to be additional eyes and ears for the RUPD. All Security Officers receive more than 40 hours of formal training through the New Jersey College & University Public Safety Association prior to assignment of duties.
Security Officers handle building lockouts and routinely inspect campus lighting and emergency phones. They provide parking enforcement for university lots, security details for special events, and they man stationary security posts by special arrangement.
