Police Officer
Rutgers University Police Officers are commissioned by the state of New Jersey, armed, and have attended New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) approved academies. This is the same training and certification received by municipal police officers in the state. Rutgers participates in the Police & Fire Retirement System. Rutgers receives approximately 200 applications for each position open, which allows for the selection of exceptional candidates.
To be eligible one must: |

Be a U.S. citizen |
• |
|
Have a valid New Jersey Drivers License |
• |
|
Have a high school or vocational school education, or equivalent. Applicants with a college degree or NJ PTC certification are preferred |
• |
|
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills |
• |
|
Be physically fit and satisfactorily complete an interview with the Police Review Board, a pre-employment medical examination, which includes drug screening, and consultation with a psychologist |
• |
|
Satisfactorily complete PTC certification |
• |
|
Pass a background check and be approved for police commissioning by the New Jersey State Police. Applicants must have no criminal convictions |
• |
|
Successfully complete a 12 week field training program |

Community Service Officer (CSO)
CSOs patrol the university, provide event security, residence hall and building security, and operate the Knight Mover Shuttle. They report directly to the police department.
To be eligible one must: |

Be enrolled as a full-time student with a minimum of 12-credits |
• |
|
Complete a successful background investigation |
• |
|
Complete the 40-hour CUPSA training course |

Security Officer
The RUPD employs Security Officers that provide after-hours escorts for students, faculty and staff, patrol the university campuses, perform campus lighting and building security inspections, and enforce parking regulations on campus.
To be eligible one must: |

Have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation to and from work |
• |
|
Have a high school or vocational school diploma, or equivalent |
• |
|
Pass a criminal background investigation |
• |
|
Have two years security/public safety experience |
• |
|
Be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time |
• |
|
Availability for shift work and occasional overtime including weekends and holidays |

Public Safety Telecommunicator - 911 Dispatcher
The RUPD operates a 24/7 9-1-1 Communication & Dispatch Center providing support to police, fire, emergency services, and transportation services. Telecommunicators perform a full range of radio, telephone and Emergency 9-1-1 duties. They handle both emergency and non-emergency calls. To be eligible one must: |

Basic computer skills |

Required certifications are: |
• |

40 hour Basic Telecommunicator Course |
• |
|
32 hour Emergency Medical Dispatch Course |
• |
|
8 hour CPR Certification |
| A candidate must successfully complete these certifications to become a state certified telecommunicator. |
